Introduction
The Youth Impact Challenge (YIC) is a Canadian nonprofit initiative that empowers young people to develop innovative solutions to social and environmental challenges through competitions, mentorship, networking and entrepreneurial support. Since its launch in 2020, YIC has helped thousands of young innovators transform early-stage ideas into projects, nonprofits and businesses that create positive community impact. While the organization supports youth-led innovation through prizes and mentorship, it is not a Danish foundation, not an enterprise foundation, and not a provider of basic research funding or traditional research grants.
History and Background
Founding of the Youth Impact Challenge
The Youth Impact Challenge was founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by Paul Richardson of Renewal Funds and Andrew Heintzman of InvestEco Capital. Concerned about the impact of the pandemic on young Canadians, they created a platform to encourage youth collaboration, innovation and social entrepreneurship. Early support from organizations such as Vancity helped launch the initiative.
Growth and Expansion
Since its inception, the Youth Impact Challenge has expanded significantly. The initiative reports engaging more than 4,000 young people from every Canadian province and territory, awarding over CAD 350,000 in prizes to more than 220 youth-led teams, while building a national network of mentors, workshops and innovation events.
Mission and Purpose
The Youth Impact Challenge aims to empower young people as changemakers by providing the resources, knowledge, mentorship and networks needed to turn innovative ideas into real-world impact.
Its mission is built around three key objectives:
- Putting resources and support into the hands of young innovators.
- Encouraging collaboration among diverse youth to solve complex challenges.
- Making innovation equitable and accessible so that more young people can transform ideas into action.
The organization supports projects addressing environmental sustainability, social innovation, community development and entrepreneurship.
Governance and Structure
The Youth Impact Challenge operates as an independent Canadian nonprofit organization led by an executive team supported by programme coordinators, volunteers, mentors, judges and partner organizations. Its activities are made possible through sponsorships, philanthropic partners and collaboration with organizations committed to youth innovation.
Unlike a corporate-owned organization, YIC is not an enterprise foundation. It focuses on supporting youth innovation through partnerships, mentorship and community investment.
Funding and Grants
Rather than providing conventional academic research grants or basic research funding, the Youth Impact Challenge offers competition prizes, mentorship and entrepreneurial development opportunities for early-stage social and environmental initiatives.
Its flagship Summer Challenge awards prizes ranging from CAD 100 to CAD 3,000 across more than 20 youth-led teams each year. Participants also receive mentorship, workshops, networking opportunities and access to experienced professionals who help refine their ideas.
Funding is intended to help participants validate ideas, develop prototypes, launch initiatives and expand community impact.

Impact and Examples of Work Funded
Since 2020, the Youth Impact Challenge has supported hundreds of youth-led initiatives addressing issues such as climate action, Indigenous language revitalization, food security, clean energy adoption, sustainable fashion, machine learning for environmental monitoring and community-based social innovation.
The initiative has also built a growing national network of mentors, entrepreneurs and community leaders who continue supporting participants beyond the competition. Alumni have progressed to business incubators, grant programmes and leadership opportunities, extending the long-term impact of their projects.
Conclusion
The Youth Impact Challenge has become one of Canada’s leading youth innovation platforms, helping young people transform creative ideas into meaningful social and environmental solutions. Through competitions, mentorship, networking and capacity building, it equips emerging changemakers with the skills and support needed to address complex community challenges.
Although it is not a Danish foundation, enterprise foundation, or provider of basic research funding and traditional research grants, the Youth Impact Challenge plays an important role in advancing youth entrepreneurship, innovation and community leadership across Canada.
