Tällberg Foundation – Inspiring Global Leadership and New Thinking for a New World

Dated: February 3, 2026

Introduction – What Is the Tällberg Foundation?

The Tällberg Foundation is a non-profit, nomadic platform and global convening organisation legally domiciled in Sweden, with offices in Stockholm and New York. It was founded in 1981 by Swedish business leader Bo Ekman to explore the major social, technological, environmental, and political challenges facing the world and to stimulate new thinking and discover new solutions.

History and Background

Since its launch in 1981, the Tällberg Foundation has connected leaders, thinkers, innovators, and activists from diverse backgrounds through conversations, workshops, and forums to address systemic global issues. While once known for the annual Tällberg Forum — a major international meeting in Sweden — the Foundation’s work has evolved toward a broader program of global leadership development, research, and action-oriented dialogue.

Today, the Tällberg Foundation still functions as a global convenor and catalyst for leadership oriented toward global challenges, rather than as a traditional project-based grantmaker.

Mission and Purpose

The mission of the Tällberg Foundation is to:

  • Encourage new thinking that can lead to actionable solutions for complex global challenges.
  • Promote values-based, ethical, and courageous leadership.
  • Build a global network of thinkers and practitioners who approach problems with intellectual openness and cross-disciplinary insight.
  • Provide platforms for conversation, collaboration, and leadership development that transcend traditional boundaries of geography, discipline, and ideology.

The Foundation focuses on four core areas where innovative leadership is essential:

  • Mass migration and humanitarian challenges
  • Disruptive technological change
  • Climate change and environmental transformation
  • The restructuring of the global political order

Governance and Structure

The Tällberg Foundation is governed as an independent, not-for-profit organisation incorporated in Sweden. It works through partnerships and collaborations rather than through formal institutional structures typical of foundation grantmaking. Its activities are funded by foundations and individual donors, primarily including significant support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) — a major international philanthropic partner.

Key Programs and Activities

Tällberg-SNF-Eliasson Global Leadership Prize

One of the Foundation’s flagship initiatives is the Tällberg-SNF-Eliasson Global Leadership Prize, established to recognise outstanding leaders whose work is innovative, courageous, and rooted in universal values. Recipients come from any sector or discipline and are selected for their ability to tackle complex 21st-century challenges with positive global impact.

  • Winners receive an unrestricted grant of $50,000.
  • Laureates join the Tällberg network of global leaders, gaining ongoing engagement and collaboration opportunities.
  • Prizes are funded with generous support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and named in honour of Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson.

Tällberg Leaders Mentoring Leaders (TLML) Program

The Foundation also runs the Tällberg Leaders Mentoring Leaders (TLML) program, a year-long mentorship initiative that pairs emerging leaders from around the world with established global leaders from the Tällberg network. This program aims to accelerate the growth of high-potential leaders with a values-based mindset, equipping them to address global issues in creative and courageous ways.

Participants in TLML are selected through a competitive process and participate in both in-person workshops and ongoing mentor exchanges throughout the year.

Conversations, Workshops, and Podcasts

Beyond prizes and leadership programs, the Tällberg Foundation convenes workshops, webinars, dialogues, and podcast series that explore pressing global themes — such as the ethics of digital transformation, strategies for climate resilience, and the future of governance in an interconnected world. These conversations are designed to foster “new thinking” and spur practical action.

Impact and Recognition

The Tällberg Foundation’s leadership initiatives have highlighted leaders from a diverse range of fields — including innovation in technology, environmental conservation, humanitarian advocacy, and journalism — selected from thousands of nominations from nearly every region of the world.

For example, the 2024 Global Leadership Prize was awarded to leaders who have worked to conserve ecosystems in the Amazon Basin, champion ethical information systems, and expand access to healthcare in underserved regions.

By amplifying voices of global leaders, nurturing emerging talent, and convening thinkers across sectors, the Foundation aims to influence global discourse and practice at a time of unprecedented societal change.

Conclusion

The Tällberg Foundation stands as a catalyst for global leadership and innovative thinking. Rather than acting as a traditional charity, it generates impact by recognising exceptional leaders, mentoring emerging changemakers, and fostering constructive dialogue across cultures and disciplines about the toughest challenges facing humanity today.
