The Nigeria Energy Forum began as an annual platform for addressing the country’s energy challenges through dialogue, technical capacity building and innovation. Its first edition was held in 2016.
Over successive editions, NEF expanded from a national conference into an international forum connecting participants from government, industry, academia, development institutions and civil society.
Earlier forums concentrated on sustainable electrification, grid modernisation and clean energy technologies. More recent editions have placed greater emphasis on energy transition, local manufacturing, critical minerals, employment creation and industrial value addition.

Dr O. D. Adeuyi serves as forum chair and head of energy technology. He is a chartered engineer registered with the United Kingdom Engineering Council.
Engineer A. S. Makinde, a former president of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, serves as co-chair. Other team members oversee strategy, innovation, research, modelling, communications, finance and business development.
NEF works with independent experts to evaluate competition entries. Innovation proposals are assessed according to local content, originality, commercial viability, employment potential, technical quality and team capacity.

The Africa Energy Innovation Challenge is open to young energy entrepreneurs from Nigeria and other African countries. It supports early-stage solutions related to social enterprise, agribusiness, manufacturing, transportation and energy management.
Energy innovation and poster exhibitions give researchers, manufacturers and project developers opportunities to present technologies, share research and initiate business partnerships.
Impact and Examples of Work Funded
The Nigeria Energy Forum reports that its programmes have engaged more than 8,000 participants and over 400 global stakeholders. It has also delivered more than 255 short courses and produced over 200 impact videos.
NEF states that its activities have helped mobilise more than $70 million for clean energy and industrial infrastructure. Reported outcomes include support for a $40 million agro-processing financing arrangement and the launch of a €30 million clean energy fund.
The student pitch competition has expanded steadily since it was co-created with impact investment company All On in 2023. Its first cohorts supported student-led solutions addressing energy access and productive uses of clean technology.
In 2024, the competition received more than 80 entries and shortlisted 11 student teams. Proposed innovations included solar-powered food processing, biogas cooking, solar hydroponics, cold storage, carbon-dioxide refrigeration and smart oxygen concentrators.
The 2025 edition attracted 93 entries from 35 institutions across 25 Nigerian states. Winning teams competed for a share of ₦4.5 million alongside mentorship and business-development support.
In 2026, available student grants increased to ₦7 million. Priority areas included youth employment, agribusiness, waste-to-energy, green manufacturing, artificial intelligence and connectivity.
The competitions help move university-based ideas towards prototypes and commercial application. They also give young innovators access to engineers, investors, companies and potential implementation partners.
