Introduction
KAUTE Foundation is a Finnish foundation that funds research in economics and technical sciences and supports the dissemination of research findings.
Its priorities include digitalization, the sustainability transition, and a diverse and just future. Through research grants, international mobility programs, and partnerships, KAUTE helps researchers develop knowledge that can support sustainable change in Finnish business and society.
History and Background
KAUTE Foundation was established in 1956 through cooperation between Finnish business and engineering graduates. Its founders were the Finnish Association of Business School Graduates and Pyöreän Tornin Kilta, an association of technology graduates associated with what is now Aalto University.
The foundation emerged during Finland’s post-war economic growth, when demand for highly educated professionals was increasing. It was created to provide financial support for studying, teaching, and research in business and engineering sciences.
Its funding portfolio has since expanded to include international research visits, university–industry cooperation, research entrepreneurship, and support for developing practical sustainability solutions.
Mission and Purpose
KAUTE’s mission is to advance research and the dissemination of knowledge in economics and technical sciences, contributing to the sustainable renewal of Finnish society and business. Its 2024–2026 strategy emphasizes working grants for researchers early in their careers and support for international mobility.
The foundation also promotes interaction between researchers and those who use research. Its strategic themes encompass artificial intelligence, data ethics, resource efficiency, circular economy, energy transition, changing working life, and fairness in sustainability transitions. Research communication and entrepreneurship are among the ways it encourages knowledge to reach wider audiences.
Governance and Structure
KAUTE’s Board is responsible for the foundation’s activities and asset management. Its Executive Director implements Board decisions and oversees financial administration, grant payments, investment-related assignments, and relationships with special funds.
A nine-member Delegation provides oversight. The two founding associations each appoint four members, while Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appoints one. The Delegation elects the Board and auditors, approves financial statements and the action plan, and supervises the foundation’s activities.
Funding and Grants
Investment-Based Funding
KAUTE uses investment assets to sustain its activities and grantmaking. Its investment portfolio had a market value of €33.8 million on 31 December 2025. The Board makes investment decisions with support from an investment committee.
Research Grant Amounts and Eligibility
For its 2026 general call, KAUTE listed working grants of €6,000, €13,000, and €26,000 for three, six, and twelve months of research, respectively. The twelve-month postdoctoral grant was €28,000, while research expense grants were available up to €5,000. These amounts relate to that call, whose application period ended on 30 January 2026.
Eligible applicants include Finnish citizens, communities, and working groups, as well as international scholars with strong connections to Finnish universities. Applicants generally need a business or engineering degree or relevant experience. The foundation excludes medical sciences and law from its general research funding and does not fund basic higher education degrees or MBA studies through that call.
Applications are submitted through KAUTE’s online grant service during the relevant application period. Assessment considers the applicant’s ability, scientific ambition, and relevance to Finnish society and business.
Major Programs and Initiatives
Green Transition Fund
The Green Transition Fund supports research groups developing solutions to climate change or biodiversity loss. It focuses on development and piloting, particularly projects at technology readiness levels 3–6. Grants range from €20,000 to €100,000 for projects lasting six months to two years.
The foundation plans to distribute €150,000–€200,000 annually through the fund in 2026, 2027, and 2028. The 2026 application period runs from 11 September to 9 October. Principal investigators must be affiliated with a Finnish university or research institute.
International Research Opportunities
The Researchers Abroad program, known as Tutkijat maailmalle, funds research visits in economics and technology at international universities and research institutes. KAUTE also participates in the Fulbright-KAUTE Foundation Award for research and professional development in the United States.
Launched in 2023, the KAUTE Foundation Fellowship supports doctoral study at Wharton or Caltech for graduates of Finnish universities. The foundation describes the fellowship as covering five years of full tuition expenses.
Industry Cooperation and Water Research
KAUTE participates in Postdocs in Companies, which connects doctoral graduates with businesses to support research-based renewal. It also collaborates with the Erkki Paasikivi Foundation on water technology research grants, particularly multi-year support for young researchers.
Impact and Examples of Work Funded
KAUTE reports distributing €8 million through 440 grants and awards between 2016 and 2025. These figures demonstrate the scale of its research funding and philanthropic activities over the decade.
In its spring 2026 general call, the foundation awarded €690,000 to 32 researchers. Supported themes included sustainable development, circular economy, artificial intelligence, and the use of large datasets. The call attracted 675 applications requesting approximately €14.48 million.
An example of its recognition of research entrepreneurship is the 2026 award to Juho Uzkurt Kaljunen, founder and CEO of NPHarvest. The company develops equipment that recovers nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater for reuse as nutrient products. KAUTE’s €5,000 award recognized the translation of academic research into a business addressing environmental and resource challenges.
Conclusion
KAUTE Foundation combines research funding with international opportunities and support for applying scientific knowledge. It is particularly relevant to early-career researchers in economics and technical sciences, research groups developing sustainability solutions, and scholars with strong Finnish university connections.
