Dated: June 16, 2026

Introduction

Trust Waikato Grants provide financial support to community organizations, charities, and nonprofit groups working to improve the quality of life in the Waikato region of New Zealand. Trust Waikato is one of New Zealand’s largest community trusts and is committed to creating vibrant, resilient, and inclusive communities through strategic grant-making and community investment.

Background

Established following the sale of Trust Bank Waikato shares, Trust Waikato invests its funds and distributes a portion of the returns to support community initiatives. Since its inception, the trust has approved more than NZ$297 million in grants for projects that benefit people, whānau, and communities across the Waikato region. Its funding approach is guided by a strengths-based philosophy known as Mana Whakahaere, which empowers communities to determine and address their own needs.

Funding Support

Trust Waikato funds initiatives that promote:

  • Community development
  • Arts and culture
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Sports and recreation
  • Wellbeing and social services
  • Tangata whenua initiatives

The trust offers Community Response Grants and supports projects, operating costs, events, and capital developments that create lasting community impact. Funding rounds are held three times each year.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants generally include:

  • Charitable trusts and nonprofit organizations
  • Incorporated societies
  • Community groups operating within the Waikato region
  • Organizations providing services that benefit Waikato communities

Applicants should demonstrate community benefit, sound governance, financial accountability, and alignment with Trust Waikato’s strategic priorities.

Benefits and Impact

Trust Waikato grants help organizations strengthen community resilience, improve social outcomes, support cultural initiatives, and enhance environmental sustainability. The trust prioritizes projects that build local capacity, amplify community voices, and create transformational change for communities with the greatest need. Through its funding, numerous organizations have expanded services, developed community facilities, and improved opportunities for residents throughout the region.

Conclusion

The Trust Waikato Grants programme is a significant source of community funding in New Zealand. By supporting projects that enhance wellbeing, participation, and community development, Trust Waikato continues to play a vital role in strengthening communities across the Waikato region and creating lasting positive impact.
