Caithness Futures Fund Supporting Community Wellbeing and Development

Dated: June 29, 2026

Introduction

The Caithness Futures Fund is a long-term community grant programme established to support sustainable development across Caithness, Scotland. Administered by Foundation Scotland and funded through community benefit contributions from RWE’s Camster II Wind Farm, the fund invests in projects that improve health, wellbeing, employability, and community resilience. The programme is designed to deliver lasting social impact in line with priorities identified in the Caithness Area Place Plan.

Background

Launched in 2026, the Caithness Futures Fund receives an initial annual contribution of £160,000, indexed over the expected 25-year lifetime of the Camster II Wind Farm. Additional contributions from other renewable energy developments are expected to expand the fund in future years, creating a long-term investment for communities across Caithness. The fund was developed following extensive community consultation to ensure local priorities shape funding decisions.

Funding Support

The fund provides grants for projects that contribute to community wellbeing and sustainable development, including:

  • Health and wellbeing initiatives
  • Mental health services and support
  • Community care and social inclusion projects
  • Employability and workforce development
  • Education and training initiatives
  • Poverty reduction programmes
  • Support for vulnerable groups
  • Community facilities and accessible public spaces
  • Environmental sustainability initiatives
  • Long-term community development projects

Applicants may request up to £20,000 per year, with multi-year funding available for up to 10 years for projects demonstrating significant long-term impact.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants generally include:

  • Community groups
  • Charitable organizations
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Community associations
  • Volunteer-led organizations
  • Social enterprises
  • Other organizations delivering benefits to residents of Caithness

Applicants do not need to be registered charities but must satisfy Foundation Scotland’s standard eligibility requirements and demonstrate strong community support and long-term benefits.

Benefits and Impact

The Caithness Futures Fund focuses on supporting transformational projects that improve quality of life across the region. Priority areas include improving access to healthcare, expanding mental health support, reducing poverty, enhancing employability, and strengthening community infrastructure. Funding decisions are made by a local panel, ensuring investments reflect community priorities and create sustainable, long-lasting outcomes.

Conclusion

The Caithness Futures Fund represents a significant long-term investment in the future of Caithness. By supporting health, wellbeing, education, employability, and community development, the fund empowers local organizations to deliver projects that build stronger, healthier, and more resilient communities while creating a lasting legacy from renewable energy investment.
