Achlachan Wind Farm Community Fund for Local Development

Dated: June 29, 2026

Introduction

The Achlachan Wind Farm Community Fund is a community benefit grant programme established by Whirlwind Renewables and administered by Foundation Scotland. The fund supports community activity and local development within the Halkirk & District Community Council area in Caithness, Highland, Scotland, with priority given to projects located within a 4-kilometre radius of the Achlachan Wind Farm. The programme aims to deliver long-term social, economic, and environmental benefits to local communities.

Background

The fund was launched in 2019 and receives approximately £30,000 annually (index-linked) throughout the expected 25-year operational life of the Achlachan Wind Farm. It forms part of the wind farm’s community benefit commitment, ensuring that nearby communities share in the long-term value generated by renewable energy development. Funding decisions are made by an independent panel of local residents, helping ensure that grants reflect community priorities and local needs.

Funding Support

The Achlachan Wind Farm Community Fund supports projects that contribute to one or more of the following objectives:

  • Developing community services and facilities
  • Sustaining and creating local employment
  • Increasing skills, education, and knowledge
  • Preserving and enhancing culture, heritage, and the natural environment
  • Improving transport, connectivity, and access
  • Community wellbeing and resilience initiatives
  • Environmental sustainability projects
  • Capacity-building for local organizations

The fund generally provides grants of up to £10,000. In exceptional cases, larger grants may be considered where projects demonstrate significant community benefit. In addition, a Micro-grants Scheme offers grants of up to £200 for small charitable community activities. Applications are accepted four times each year.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants generally include:

  • Constituted community groups
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Charitable organizations
  • Community associations
  • Volunteer-led groups
  • Other organizations delivering charitable activities that benefit residents of the Halkirk & District Community Council area

Organizations do not need to be registered charities but must meet Foundation Scotland’s standard eligibility requirements. Applications from organizations outside the fund area may be considered if they clearly demonstrate direct benefits for local residents.

Benefits and Impact

The fund has supported numerous community-led initiatives that strengthen local services, improve community facilities, develop skills, protect the environment, and enhance cultural heritage. By encouraging local consultation, partnership working, and sustainable development, the programme helps build stronger and more resilient rural communities while ensuring that renewable energy investment creates lasting local value.

Conclusion

The Achlachan Wind Farm Community Fund is an important source of long-term funding for grassroots organizations and community projects in Caithness. Through investment in local facilities, employment, education, environmental conservation, and community wellbeing, the fund supports sustainable development and ensures that the benefits of renewable energy are shared with surrounding communities.
