Introduction
The C.B. Facey Foundation is the charitable arm of Pan Jamaica Group, providing grants, scholarships, sponsorships and institutional support for education, environmental conservation and inclusive arts initiatives across Jamaica.
History and Background
The C.B. Facey Foundation has supported Jamaican communities for more than four decades. A PanJam annual report published in 2019 stated that the Foundation had been operating for 35 years, placing the beginning of its work around 1984.
The Foundation was created as the philanthropic vehicle of the Pan Jamaica Group and has developed long-term relationships with schools, environmental organizations, artists, educational institutions and community-based initiatives.
Its work reflects Pan Jamaica Group’s commitment to contributing to Jamaica’s social, cultural and environmental development through structured charitable investment.
Mission and Purpose
The C.B. Facey Foundation seeks to create meaningful and lasting change by supporting education, the arts and the environment.
Its education work aims to improve access to quality learning, strengthen early-childhood and primary-school infrastructure and support the academic development of talented students.
The Foundation’s environmental activities protect Jamaica’s natural heritage, strengthen conservation organizations and promote research, advocacy, public awareness and sustainable management of ecosystems.
Its arts programming supports creative education, artistic development and initiatives that produce measurable benefits for Jamaica’s cultural and creative industries.
Governance and Structure
The C.B. Facey Foundation is a registered Jamaican charitable organization associated with Pan Jamaica Group Limited.
A Board of Trustees provides financial oversight, safeguards the Foundation’s resources and helps ensure that supported activities meet legal, ethical and accountability requirements.
Stephen Facey serves as Chairman of the Foundation. He brings experience in architecture, property development, investment, cultural institutions and civic organizations. Other trustees and directors associated with the Foundation contribute expertise in finance, corporate governance, business and community development.
The Foundation’s executive team manages grantmaking, scholarships, partnerships, sponsorships, conservation activities and relationships with supported institutions.
Funding and Grants
The C.B. Facey Foundation receives support from Pan Jamaica Group, charitable donations, corporate and individual partners and dedicated endowment funds.
The Foundation manages an endowment intended to provide sustainable resources for its legacy projects. Contributions are invested with the intention of generating both social and environmental returns.
Dedicated funding mechanisms include the Maurice and Valerie Facey Endowment Fund, the Lalyce Gray Early Childhood Institution Endowment Fund and donor support for Jamaica Conservation Partners.
The Foundation accepts grant applications annually from August 12 to October 12 through its online application portal.
Proposals must fall within the Foundation’s three mandated areas: children and education, the lived environment and inclusive arts. Sponsorship and ticket-purchase requests within these areas may be submitted throughout the year.
Major Programs and Initiatives
Children and Education Grants
The Foundation supports projects involving basic schools, primary-school infrastructure and psychosocial programs for students.
Assistance may include improvements to learning environments, educational materials, institutional support and programs that address children’s emotional, developmental and academic needs.
The Foundation has developed long-term relationships with schools and educational institutions, including early-childhood and primary schools serving communities with limited resources.
Environmental Grants
Environmental funding is available for organizations and projects with a proven record of success in Jamaica.
The Foundation prioritizes initiatives that conserve natural resources, restore ecosystems, strengthen environmental organizations, build the capacity of conservation professionals and promote environmental advocacy and public awareness.
Inclusive Arts Grants
Inclusive Arts Grants support programs and projects that create meaningful outcomes within Jamaica’s creative industries.
Funding may help artists and arts organizations deliver cultural programs, strengthen professional opportunities, increase public participation and contribute to the preservation and development of Jamaican artistic expression.
Scholarship Program
The C.B. Facey Foundation provides scholarships through the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and the University of Technology’s Caribbean School of Architecture.
The scholarship program supports students undertaking advanced studies in fine arts and architecture. Interested students must apply through the bursary offices of the participating institutions rather than directly to the Foundation.
Jamaica Conservation Partners
Jamaica Conservation Partners is an environmental initiative of the C.B. Facey Foundation that provides grants and institutional support to organizations protecting Jamaica’s ecosystems and biodiversity.
Supported work has included coral-reef restoration, fish-sanctuary protection, environmental law and advocacy, research into the effects of bauxite mining, crocodile surveys and conservation capacity building in Cockpit Country communities.
Organizations supported during 2023–2025 included the Jamaica Environment Trust, White River Marine Association, Southern Trelawny Environmental Agency, Windsor Research Centre, the University of the West Indies Institute for Sustainable Development and the Caribbean Coastal Area Management Foundation.
Maurice Facey Lecture Series
The Maurice Facey Lecture Series honours Maurice Facey, founder of Pan Jamaica Group, and his contribution to urban development in Jamaica.
Launched in 2019, the series brings together experienced thinkers and practitioners to discuss urban planning, resilient cities, renewable energy, infrastructure, civic leadership and the revitalization of Downtown Kingston.
Sponsorship Support
The Foundation accepts year-round requests for event sponsorships and ticket purchases relating to education, environmental protection and the arts.
This mechanism allows the Foundation to support relevant activities outside its annual competitive grant cycle.
Impact and Examples of Work Funded
In 2023, the C.B. Facey Foundation awarded 25 grants and 15 tertiary scholarships while providing support to three partner schools across Jamaica.
Examples of funded environmental work include protecting the White River Fish Sanctuary, strengthening environmental law and advocacy, studying the restoration of soils affected by mining and improving marine resources through reef restoration and public education.
The Foundation has supported peacebuilding and conflict-resolution programs in schools through its partnership with the Violence Prevention Alliance. Participating schools created peace gardens as practical expressions of education, dialogue and nonviolence.
Its support for Kingston Creative has contributed to the development of Downtown Kingston as a creative district and provided opportunities for artists and cultural entrepreneurs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation also helped employ local artisans to produce protective masks for vulnerable Kingston communities.
Through education grants and long-term school partnerships, the Foundation has supported learning materials, school facilities, early-childhood education and psychosocial interventions for children.
Conclusion
The C.B. Facey Foundation combines grants, scholarships, sponsorships, endowment funding and institutional partnerships to strengthen Jamaican education, protect the natural environment and expand opportunities in the arts. Its long-term approach emphasizes collaboration with organizations capable of creating measurable and sustainable community impact.
